Make sure that you are purchasing pure pepper- (OC) not tear gas- CS or CN. Tear gas is a pain inducer. Those under the influence of drugs or alcohol don't feel it. It typically causes them to be angrier and escalates the attack.
Pepper spray has a shelf-life of 2-3 years. Every label has an expiration date, or it is imprinted on the canister. Check your spray.
Always test your spray at least every 6 months. Walk outside and hold your spray down low and spray. Make sure the wind will not blow it back on you. Most 1/2 oz. sprays have 8-10 one second sprays.
It is illegal to take pepper spray onboard an airplane! It is a federal crime. Leave your pepper spray at home. You may mail pepper spray by US Mail, but it must go "ground" or "parcel post" (write that clearly on the package). Shipping by UPS Ground is the preferrable method and is trackable. You must disclose what you are shipping.
